Disposable examination gloves have been a very hot commodity since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. As demand exploded, traditional supply chains could not keep up and critical shortages were everywhere. This even led the CDC to publish unprecedented guidance on “Strategies for optimizing the supply disposable medical gloves,” which included guidance on crisis capacity strategies, such as canceling elective and non-urgent procedures, using non-medical grade gloves (such as food-grade gloves), and disinfecting and reusing disposable medical gloves using alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Despite the variety of brands you see in the market, many brands are made by the same manufacturers—mainly in Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand. Furthermore, virtually no production capability resides within the United States. All these conditions led to a global bidding war, country by country each trying to outbid the other, which drove up prices and increased fraudulent transactions and counterfeits.
The situation does not appear to be improving. The GAO found that the national strategic stockpile of gloves dropped from 16.9 million in December 2019 to 2 million in October 2020, right around the time the US was preparing its national efforts to distribute 600 million doses of vaccine.
The good news is that Kovid Shop and our strategic sourcing partner, VMD Health, have a reliable and steady supply of disposable examination gloves made from a vinyl and nitrile blend with ships arriving weekly from Asia.
